Sydney Driveway Paving Specialists — Quality Installs That Handle the Climate

Fencing and Landscaping Experts install driveways across Sydney using exposed aggregate concrete, interlocking pavers, plain concrete, natural stone and asphalt. Our pricing starts at $60/m² for plain concrete and $80/m² for the more popular exposed aggregate finish. A typical double driveway (40m²) costs $4,000–$9,000 fully installed. We provide free on-site quotes with no obligation.

Sydney's climate and soils create specific challenges for driveway construction. Western Sydney regularly reaches 44°C+ in summer, causing concrete slabs to expand and contract significantly. Combined with the heavy clay soils found across Parramatta, Penrith and Campbelltown LGAs, inadequate sub-base preparation is the leading cause of driveway cracking and heaving. Our team excavates to the correct depth, installs compacted road base and uses correctly spaced expansion joints to give your driveway the best chance of a long, crack-free life.

We work across all Greater Sydney suburbs — from the Hills District and Hawkesbury in the north-west to the Sutherland Shire and Campbelltown in the south. Whether you are replacing an old crumbling concrete slab, upgrading to an exposed aggregate feature driveway, or installing pavers on a new-estate property in Kellyville or Gregory Hills, we have the crew and equipment to complete the job to a high standard.

Driveway Materials & Pricing Guide

Five proven driveway materials to suit every budget, aesthetic and site condition across Sydney. All prices are indicative installed rates — contact us for an exact quote.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete

$80–$120/m²
25–40 years

The most popular driveway finish in Sydney. Decorative stones are exposed by washing away the surface cement, producing a textured, slip-resistant surface that handles Western Sydney heat and clay soils well. Requires sealing every 5–8 years.

Ideal For

Residential driveways, pool surrounds, high-traffic areas

  • Slip-resistant texture
  • Wide colour range
  • Hides minor cracking
  • Excellent kerb appeal

Interlocking Concrete Pavers

$120–$180/m²
30+ years

Individual pavers interlock over a compacted sub-base, allowing slight ground movement without cracking the whole surface. Particularly popular in Hills District estates. Individual units can be lifted and replaced if a pipe repair is needed beneath.

Ideal For

Hills District estates, feature entrances, council crossovers

  • Individual pavers replaceable
  • No slab cracking
  • Wide design options
  • Flexible in clay soils

Plain Concrete

$60–$90/m²
20–30 years

The most affordable permanent driveway option. Broom-finished for slip resistance. Expansion joints are critical in Western Sydney to control cracking caused by extreme summer heat (44°C+) and clay soil movement.

Ideal For

Budget-conscious projects, secondary access driveways

  • Lowest installed cost
  • Clean, minimal aesthetic
  • Highly durable under load
  • Easy maintenance

Natural Stone — Sandstone & Bluestone

$180–$280/m²
40+ years

Sandstone cobbles and bluestone setts create a premium, timeless entrance. Each stone is individually laid on a mortar bed. Popular in upper-market suburbs including Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills and Engadine. Requires periodic re-pointing.

Ideal For

High-value homes, heritage properties, prestige entrances

  • Premium aesthetic
  • Extremely long lifespan
  • Unique natural variation
  • High resale value

Asphalt

$40–$70/m²
15–20 years

The most cost-effective option per square metre, especially for large or long driveways on rural properties. Asphalt softens slightly in extreme heat, so adequate compaction and a sealed surface are essential in Western Sydney summers.

Ideal For

Large rural driveways, commercial yards, budget projects

  • Lowest cost per m²
  • Fast installation
  • Good load-bearing
  • Easy resurfacing

Why Sydney Driveways Need Local Expertise

Sydney is not a uniform city for driveway work. The soil profile, climate and council requirements differ significantly across the metropolitan area, and these factors directly affect what materials work and how the job must be prepared.

Clay Soil & Sub-Base Compaction

A large portion of Western and South-Western Sydney sits on heavy, expansive clay. When dry clay dries in summer it shrinks; when wet it swells. A concrete slab poured directly onto poorly prepared clay will heave, crack and become a trip hazard within a few years. We excavate to minimum 100mm depth, add compacted road base and compact it with a vibrating plate compactor before any concrete is poured.

Extreme Summer Heat (44°C+)

Western Sydney regularly records temperatures above 44°C in January and February. Concrete expands in heat and contracts overnight. Without correctly spaced expansion joints — typically every 3–4 metres — cracking is almost inevitable. We cut control joints into all concrete driveways and use the correct concrete mix strength (typically N25 or N32) for Sydney's temperature range.

New Estate Demand — Hills District & Macarthur

New residential estates across Kellyville, Rouse Hill, Gregory Hills, Leppington and Oran Park have high demand for driveway installations. Builders often leave a basic crossover but no finished driveway. Concrete paver driveways and exposed aggregate finishes are the most requested styles in these estates, where presentation and kerb appeal directly impact property value.

Council Crossover & Kerb Cut Requirements

If your project requires a new vehicle crossing — cutting through the existing kerb and gutter — you need a Roads Act application approved by your council before work starts. This is separate from a DA and typically takes 4–8 weeks for approval. We advise on the process and can help you understand what's required for your specific LGA.

Our Driveway Installation Process

  1. 1

    Free On-Site Assessment

We visit your property, measure the area, assess soil and drainage conditions, review council requirements and provide a fixed-price quote.

  2. 2

    Site Preparation & Excavation

We excavate to the required depth, remove existing concrete or pavers if needed, and grade the sub-base for positive stormwater drainage away from the home.

  3. 3

    Sub-Base & Formwork

Compacted road base is installed and compacted. Formwork is set to the correct levels and expansion joints are placed at the correct spacing.

  4. 4

    Pour, Lay or Set

Depending on your chosen material, we pour and finish concrete (exposed aggregate, broom or plain), lay interlocking pavers on a compacted bedding layer, or set natural stone on a mortar bed.

  5. 5

    Curing & Sealing

Concrete is protected during curing (minimum 7 days before vehicle traffic). Exposed aggregate and pavers are sealed to enhance colour and protect against staining.

  6. 6

    Final Inspection & Clean-Up

We walk through the completed driveway with you, confirm drainage is correct, and leave the site clean. We explain the care requirements for your specific material.

Driveway Paving Across Greater Sydney

We install driveways throughout the greater Sydney metropolitan area. Our main coverage areas include Western Sydney, the Hills District, Macarthur, South-West Sydney and the Sutherland Shire.

Western Sydney

Parramatta, Penrith, Blacktown, Fairfield, Liverpool and Campbelltown make up our core Western Sydney coverage area. These suburbs sit on expansive clay soils, making proper sub-base compaction essential. Exposed aggregate concrete is the most popular driveway finish across these LGAs due to its durability and mid-range cost.

Hills District

Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills, Kellyville, Rouse Hill, Bella Vista and Norwest see strong demand for concrete paver and exposed aggregate driveways, particularly in newer estates. Homeowners in the Hills District frequently combine a decorative driveway with retaining walls and garden landscaping for full front-yard transformation projects.

Macarthur & South-West

Campbelltown, Camden, Narellan, Gregory Hills, Leppington and Oran Park are among Sydney's fastest-growing residential areas. New estates in this corridor have high demand for driveway paving as properties are completed. We handle both single and double driveway installations, including council crossover applications where required.

Sutherland Shire

Sutherland, Cronulla, Miranda, Caringbah and surrounds. Natural stone and premium paver driveways are popular in the Shire, where properties command strong sale values and owners invest more in presentation. We also service Liverpool, Bankstown, Auburn and Merrylands for driveway replacement projects on older homes.

Driveway Paving Sydney — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best driveway material in Sydney?

Exposed aggregate concrete is the most popular driveway material in Sydney — it is durable, naturally slip-resistant, and costs $80–$120/m². Interlocking concrete pavers offer design flexibility and individual paver replaceability at $120–$180/m². Plain concrete is the budget option at $60–$90/m², while asphalt suits long driveways or rural properties at $40–$70/m².

How much does driveway paving cost in Sydney?

Sydney driveway paving costs vary by material: plain concrete $60–$90/m², exposed aggregate concrete $80–$120/m², interlocking pavers $120–$180/m², and natural stone such as sandstone or bluestone $180–$280/m². A typical double driveway of around 40m² costs $4,000–$9,000 fully installed including sub-base, formwork and sealing. Site factors such as slope, existing demolition and stormwater requirements affect the final price.

How long does a driveway last in Sydney's climate?

Exposed aggregate concrete lasts 25–40 years when sealed every 5–8 years. Interlocking pavers can last 30+ years and have the advantage that individual units can be replaced if damaged. Plain concrete typically lasts 20–30 years but is more susceptible to cracking in Sydney's expansive clay soils. Asphalt has a shorter lifespan of 15–20 years and requires resurfacing, but it performs well under heavy loads and extreme heat if properly installed.

Do I need council approval for a new driveway in Sydney?

Most like-for-like driveway replacements within the existing footprint are exempt development in NSW and do not require a DA. However, if you are creating a new vehicle crossing or altering the kerb and gutter, you must lodge a Roads Act application with your local council. In all cases, stormwater drainage must be managed on-site and must not concentrate runoff onto neighbouring properties. We advise checking your specific LGA requirements before commencing work.

What driveway style is popular in western Sydney?

Exposed aggregate concrete is the dominant choice across the Parramatta, Penrith and Campbelltown LGAs because of its durability and competitive pricing. Concrete paver driveways are very popular in the Hills District, particularly in new estates where developers specify them for their aesthetic appeal. Sandstone cobble and bluestone pavers are used in higher-value properties across Baulkham Hills, Castle Hill and parts of the Sutherland Shire.
