Material selection matters enormously. A concrete block wall is the right choice for a high-load 1.2m boundary wall in Baulkham Hills clay soils. A sandstone wall is the right choice for a 600mm garden terrace in an established Eastern Suburbs garden. Timber sleepers suit low-to-medium height garden retaining walls where cost and natural aesthetics are priorities. Reinforced concrete is needed for walls over 1.5m or where engineering certification is required. We advise on the correct specification for your site — and we include proper ag-pipe drainage on every wall because inadequate drainage is by far the most common cause of retaining wall failure in Sydney.

Council approval requirements vary across Sydney. Most walls under 600mm are exempt development, but requirements differ between Hills Shire, Blacktown, Sutherland Shire, Northern Beaches Council and inner-city councils.
